Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! Today we celebrate Native peoples, communities, and nations, while recognizing the persecution, genocide, and discrimination Indigenous peoples have faced for centuries on their own ancestral homelands.
As part of FIU, we pay our respects to the traditional custodians of this land, and their Elders past and present: The territory that we now know as South Florida has been the traditional homelands of Native nations including the Calusa, the Tequesta and today the Seminole and Miccosukee. Let this be a day to remind us to listen to Native voices, and advocate on behalf of Native rights.
