The profession of journalist remains a highly dangerous one in Central Asia, with appalling cases of threats, attacks, beatings, illegal arrests, draconian legislation, judicial prosecution, and censorship continuing to be a normal part of daily life for journalists. In Tajikistan, authorities seek to control the information space as much as possible, in order to restrict access to alternative sources of information, in particular, by blocking internet resources and social networks. Under the guise of fighting terrorism, the authorities abuse human rights, especially freedom of speech and freedom of association. In general, political pluralism in the country is limited. How the community of Tajik the indigenous community of Tajikstan is pursuing indigeneity, human rights and freedom of media are key components of discussion during the talk.
Brief Bio: Mr. Firuz Baratov is a Fulbright Scholar in Brooklyn Law School, conducting research onMedia Law. From 2011 to 2014 with iEARN implemented three youth journalism project with the active participation of teachers and students in Tajikistan. He also managed regional media project“Contributing to stability and peace in Central Asia through media literacy, improved reporting, and regional cooperation” in Tajikistan funded by the European Union and implemented by Internews.
Firuz Baratov has been working in the media field since 2002. During last 7 years under his coordination and management, Tajik media outlets and media NGO implemented 20 media projects in Tajikistan which were focused on media development, new media, youth journalism, citizen journalism, environment, legal and digital security.
