Indigenous People’s Day at FIU approved by Student Government Association.

March 5, 2018, our FIU Student Government Association at Modesto Maidique Campus took a monumental step in making FIU a more inclusive school for our Indigenous students while recognizing the need to make things right and set the record straight for Indigenous Peoples' globally. An overwhelming majority of the SGA Senate approved Resolution 1801: Resolution to Establish Indigenous Peoples' Day of Celebration at Florida International University. FIU is to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day annually on the second Monday of October. This resolution will need to be approved by the FIU Board of Trustees, FIU Foundation Board, and all relevant communities on behalf of SGA. Steps are already being taken to enforce and implement the change. This was accomplished through the continuing efforts of the members of the student club, the Global Indigenous Forum. Let’s congratulate President Cesar Castillo, Anthropology undergraduate student, who led this long-standing initiative of the Global Indigenous Group, and the FIU Global Indigenous Group.
